What type of fire extinguisher is suitable for Class A fires?

Water or foam extinguishers are suitable for Class A fires, which involve ordinary combustible materials such as wood, paper, and fabric. These extinguishers work by cooling the burning material and eliminating the heat that sustains the fire. Water, in particular, is effective in absorbing heat and suppressing flames when applied to these types of fires. Foam extinguishers can also form a barrier to suffocate the fire while cooling it.

On the other hand, while dry chemical extinguishers can be used on Class A fires, they are more versatile and often used for multiple classes of fires, including B and C. Carbon dioxide extinguishers are ideal for Class B and C fires but do not provide the cooling effect needed for Class A materials. Wet chemical extinguishers are specifically designed for cooking oil and fat fires, which classify as Class K fires, not suitable for typical Class A fires involving general combustibles.
